About this tool

Kubernetes Resource Diff compares two Kubernetes YAML manifests and shows which resources were added, removed, changed, or left unchanged. It matches resources by kind, namespace, and metadata name, then reports field-level value transitions so manifest changes are easy to review.

What is a Kubernetes Resource Diff?

A Kubernetes Resource Diff is a manifest comparison tool for reviewing changes between two versions of Kubernetes YAML. Instead of comparing raw YAML text line by line, it understands Kubernetes resources and groups changes around individual objects such as Deployments, Services, ConfigMaps, Secrets, and StatefulSets.

The comparison supports multi-document YAML files separated by --- and produces a resource-level view of what was added, removed, changed, or left unchanged.

How are Kubernetes resources matched?

Each resource is identified using its Kubernetes kind, namespace, and metadata.name. For example, Deployment/default/nginx represents the nginx Deployment in the default namespace.

Using resource identity instead of YAML line positions makes the comparison more useful when documents are reordered or when unrelated resources are added to a manifest.

What does the diff show?

  • Resources that exist only in the new manifest
  • Resources that were removed from the new manifest
  • Resources with field-level changes
  • Resources with no detected changes
  • The exact paths of changed fields
  • Previous and new values for changed fields
  • YAML parsing errors with line and column information when available

Common use cases

  • Review Kubernetes manifest changes before deployment
  • Compare staging and production YAML configurations
  • Inspect changes between application releases
  • Review changes to replicas, images, ports, labels, environment variables, and resource settings
  • Understand changes in large multi-resource YAML files
  • Investigate configuration differences during Kubernetes troubleshooting

Important comparison details

Field changes are reported using paths such as spec.replicas or spec.template.spec.containers[0].image. Arrays are compared by their positions, so changing the order of items in an array can result in multiple detected changes.

The tool compares the parsed YAML structure rather than the original formatting. Differences in whitespace, indentation style, or YAML formatting that produce the same data structure are therefore not treated as resource changes.

Limitations

This tool performs a structural comparison of YAML manifests. It does not contact a Kubernetes cluster, execute kubectl diff, evaluate admission policies, or determine whether a resulting configuration will successfully deploy.

It also does not perform semantic Kubernetes validation. A field can be structurally different while still being invalid for the Kubernetes API version or resource type.

Privacy and security

The comparison is performed locally in your browser. The tool does not need access to a Kubernetes cluster or Docker environment.

Even though the comparison is local, avoid pasting sensitive production credentials or other confidential configuration into any browser-based tool unless you are comfortable processing that information in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

▶How does Kubernetes Resource Diff identify the same resource?

Resources are matched using their kind, namespace, and metadata.name. For example, Deployment/default/nginx is matched with another Deployment named nginx in the default namespace.

▶Can I compare multiple Kubernetes resources at once?

Yes. The tool supports multi-document YAML, including manifests containing multiple resources separated by YAML document markers such as ---.

▶Does this tool compare YAML text line by line?

No. It parses the YAML and compares the resulting resource structures. Formatting-only differences are therefore not treated as resource changes.

▶Does it connect to my Kubernetes cluster?

No. The tool only compares the YAML provided in the two editors and does not connect to a Kubernetes API server or require cluster credentials.

▶Can it validate whether the changed Kubernetes manifest will deploy?

No. It identifies structural differences but does not perform full Kubernetes API validation, admission-policy evaluation, or runtime deployment checks.

▶How are arrays compared?

Array values are compared by their positions. If an item is inserted, removed, or reordered, the affected positions may appear as changed fields.
