About this tool
The JSON ↔ YAML Converter transforms structured data between JSON and YAML directly in your browser. It is useful for configuration files, Kubernetes manifests, application settings, API data, and development workflows where the same data needs to be represented in both formats.
What is JSON and YAML?
JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a structured data format commonly used by APIs, applications, configuration files, and automation tools. YAML is a human-readable data serialization format frequently used for configuration and infrastructure definitions.
Both formats represent objects, arrays, strings, numbers, booleans, and null values, but they use different syntax and have different capabilities.
What does this converter do?
The converter supports both directions: JSON to YAML and YAML to JSON. JSON input is parsed and formatted as YAML, while YAML input is parsed and serialized as readable JSON.
YAML files containing multiple documents separated by --- are supported. When multiple YAML documents are converted to JSON, they are represented as a JSON array.
- Convert JSON configuration into YAML
- Convert YAML configuration into JSON
- Format converted output with readable indentation
- Process multiple YAML documents
- Open JSON, YAML, and YML files
- Copy or download converted data
Common use cases
- Converting Kubernetes YAML manifests into JSON for API or scripting workflows
- Converting JSON API responses into YAML for easier manual editing
- Moving configuration between tools that prefer JSON or YAML
- Inspecting structured data in a more readable format
- Preparing configuration examples and documentation
- Testing whether JSON or YAML input is syntactically valid
Important YAML considerations
YAML provides features that do not have direct JSON equivalents, including comments, anchors, aliases, and some YAML-specific data types. Converting YAML to JSON therefore represents the data structure rather than preserving every aspect of the original YAML source.
Comments and formatting information are not preserved when YAML is converted to JSON. When JSON is converted back to YAML, the resulting YAML is newly generated from the parsed data.
Multiple YAML documents
YAML can contain multiple documents in one file. Documents are commonly separated using a line containing ---. The converter parses all non-empty documents.
If the YAML input contains one document, the JSON output represents that document directly. If it contains multiple documents, the JSON output is an array containing each parsed document.
How to use the converter
- Choose JSON → YAML or YAML → JSON.
- Paste your data into the input editor or open a local file.
- The conversion runs automatically when valid input is provided.
- Review the generated output in the output editor.
- Copy or download the converted result when needed.
Privacy and security
Conversion is performed locally in your browser. The tool does not need to upload the JSON or YAML content to a ToolTunnel backend for conversion.
This makes the converter suitable for configuration data that should remain on your device. However, you should still avoid sharing sensitive data unnecessarily and follow your organization's security policies.
Limitations
The converter validates and transforms structured data, but it does not validate application-specific schemas. For example, syntactically valid Kubernetes YAML may still contain invalid Kubernetes fields.
YAML features without a direct JSON representation may not survive a round trip unchanged. Comments, anchors, aliases, and source formatting should therefore not be expected to remain identical.
Frequently Asked Questions
▶Can I convert JSON to YAML?
Yes. Select JSON → YAML, paste or open your JSON, and the converter generates formatted YAML.
▶Can I convert YAML to JSON?
Yes. Select YAML → JSON and provide YAML input. The converter parses the YAML and generates formatted JSON.
▶Does the converter support multiple YAML documents?
Yes. YAML documents separated by --- are parsed individually. Multiple documents are represented as a JSON array when converted to JSON.
▶Are YAML comments preserved?
No. Comments are not part of the resulting JSON data structure and are not preserved during YAML to JSON conversion.
▶Can this tool validate YAML?
It performs YAML parsing as part of conversion, so invalid YAML produces an error. It does not perform application-specific schema validation.
▶Can I convert Kubernetes YAML?
Yes. Kubernetes manifests are commonly represented as YAML and can be converted when they are syntactically valid YAML. The converter does not verify Kubernetes API schemas.
▶Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Conversion is performed locally in your browser. The tool does not require sending your JSON or YAML content to a backend service.
▶Why does YAML look different after conversion?
Conversion creates a new representation from the parsed data. Original comments, formatting, anchors, aliases, and other source-level details may not be preserved.
